How is reliability measured?
Table of Contents
Each year, Consumer Reports compiles thousands of reports on failures that occurred in the last 12 months, analyzing up to 20 problem areas, from minor trim details to serious engine, transmission or electric vehicle battery failures. With this data, a predicted reliability score from 1 to 100, determinant for the final ratings of almost all new cars on the market.
Key trends of the year
The results show a clear gap between available technologies:
- Los hybrids (non-plug-in) remain the most solid option, combining good performance with high reliability.
- Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) continue to show significant problems, especially in batteries, charging systems and electronic components.
- Tesla surprises with a historic improvement
- After years of criticism for quality problems, Tesla rises eight positions, reaching ninth place among the most reliable brands. The Model 3 is now the most reliable electric car and the Model Y leads among electric SUVs. Although the Model S and Model X improve to average, the Cybertruck continues to perform below average.
Toyota, Subaru and Lexus: reliability above all
Lexus, driven by a conservative strategy of redesigns and the use of proven platforms.
Subaru, strong in models like Impreza and Crosstrek.
Toyota, which recovers positions thanks to the improvement of redesigned models such as Camry, Tacoma and Tundra, and adds six models among the ten most reliable of the year.
Regions and vehicle types
- Asia continues to dominate with seven brands in the Top 10.
- Europe maintains average performance, with BMW standing out.
- The United States lags behind, although Tesla and Buick show improvements.
By category, cars (sedans and hatchbacks) are the most reliable, followed by SUVs and minivans, while pickup trucks continue in last place.
