A Day Dedicated to the Power of Reading
Mooskirchen, Austria, recently celebrated the Austrian Reading Day with a series of engaging events at the local compulsory school. The initiative aimed to foster a love for reading among students of all ages, and it succeeded in doing just that, thanks to a diverse range of activities and special guests.
Classroom Adventures: Stories Come to Life
Teachers across the Mooskirchen compulsory school cluster dedicated their time to reading captivating stories to their students. Younger children were particularly enthralled by the tale of the rainbow fish, a classic story that promotes themes of sharing and friendship. This approach aligns with current educational research, which emphasizes the importance of early literacy interventions in shaping lifelong reading habits. According to a 2024 study by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, science and Research, children who are exposed to reading from a young age demonstrate improved cognitive skills and academic performance.
International Flair: Crime Fiction in English
Adding an international dimension to the day, a student completing her master’s degree and interning at the middle school, captivated older students with an exciting crime story read in English. The students’ enthusiasm was so palpable that a sequel reading session is already planned for the following week. This highlights the growing importance of English language skills in today’s globalized world. In fact, a recent Eurostat report indicates that proficiency in English significantly increases employment opportunities for young adults across Europe.
A major highlight for the school’s football enthusiasts was the visit from four players from the local Oberligaklub USV Hoome Mooskirchen. These athletes traded their cleats for books, sharing cherished stories from their childhoods with eager young fans. This initiative not only promoted reading but also demonstrated that reading is an activity enjoyed by people from all walks of life, including athletes. This is particularly crucial, as research suggests that male role models can play a crucial role in encouraging boys to read.

A Star-Studded Finale: August Schmölzer Graces the Stage
The reading day culminated in a truly special event: a reading by renowned Austrian actor August Schmölzer. Thanks to the efforts of Maria Grinschgl, a long-time teacher at the Mooskirchen middle school, Schmölzer captivated the entire middle school with his engaging performance. Following the reading, the children had the chance to meet Schmölzer and receive autographs, creating a lasting memory of the day. Schmölzer’s participation underscores the importance of celebrity endorsements in promoting literacy. Studies have shown that children are more likely to engage with reading when they see their favorite celebrities doing the same.
The enthusiastic children were able to get autographs afterwards and will no longer forget this famous visit.
