The Moon is a satellite that orbits the Earth and the Sun at the same time in revolution and translation movements, respectively. This process corresponds to the lunar cycle and lasts about 29.5 days. In about a week, the satellite enters a different phase. They are: New, Rising, Full and Waning. This Sunday (26), the Moon is in the Nova.

The phases of the Moon
The Moon is a satellite and, consequently, does not have its own light, as is the case with stars. In this sense, the bright moon that we see from Earth corresponds to the reflection of the Sun’s illumination on an apparent face of the Moon, always in relation to our terrestrial point of view. Thus, the movement of revolution and translation that it performs around the Earth and Sun is what makes the Moon’s phases possible.

In addition to the four main phases: New, Crescent, Full and Waning, there are four other intermediate phases of the Moon: First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Quarter. The lunar cycle always begins and ends at the New Moon, following the sequence below.

- New moon
- Crescent Moon
- Crescent quarter

- Last Quarter

New moon
The New Moon corresponds to the beginning of the Lunar Cycle and is not visible from Earth’s point of view. This is because the side of the satellite that is visible to the planet is the opposite side to that illuminated by the Sun.

Crescent Moon
The Crescent Moon is the moment when the illuminated face of the Moon begins to become visible from Earth. It precedes the New Moon and only a band of the satellite is visible. After the Crescent Moon come two intermediate phases: the First Quarter and the Gibbous Crescent.
Full moon
After the Gibbous Crescent, the Moon reaches the Full phase. This is the time when the satellite is at its most visible from Earth. In other words, its illuminated face is the same as that facing the planet.
Waning Moon
In the continuation of the movement of revolution and translation, the Waning Moon is when the visible part of the satellite decreases, leaving just a strip. This phase precedes the New Moon, when the Lunar Cycle restarts.
