The court determined that Tomy Langevin lacked the capacity to differentiate between right and wrong at the time of the crime due to mental disorders.

According to reports, Tomy Langevin suffered from schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. He also had a history of cannabis dependence and abused cocaine and amphetamines.

Between 2004 and the summer of 2009, Langevin was hospitalized three times for a total of seven months due to his mental health. He reportedly cut ties with his family.

“At the time of his admission to the Philippe-Pinel Institute in August 2009, doctors observed that he was struggling with psychotic symptoms and experiencing mystical delusions,” according to a court decision.

Unconditional Release Granted

“Convinced that the accused no longer represents a important risk for public security.”

After undergoing treatment for several years, tomy Langevin was granted an unconditional release in 2019.

“Historical factors, which are mainly parricide, should not [eux seuls] prevent unconditional release,” stated the mental disorders examination commission (CET).

The Commission stated they were “convinced that the accused no longer represents a significant risk for public security.”

It was also noted that Tomy Langevin had not committed any violent assaults since the murder of his father.

along with maintaining “complete abstinence,” he had developed “an excellent therapeutic link with the whole treating team.”

However, a year prior, in 2018, the CE had only granted parole to Langevin, as he still represented “a significant risk for public security.” Conditions included living in an approved location and maintaining peace.
