MONTREAL – Notable traffic disruptions are expected across Montreal this weekend as the city hosts the annual Tour de l’Île and Tour la Nuit cycling events, drawing thousands of participants.
The Tour la Nuit kicks off Friday evening, with street closures in effect from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. The affected area is bordered by Viau and Beaubien streets, and also Henri-Bourassa and Langelier Boulevards.
“If you are within the scope and you are used to doing your shopping in the evening by car, go ahead, but before 7:30 p.m., because after there will be congestion,” advises Philippe Sabourin, the city’s administrative spokesman.
On Sunday, the Tour de l’Île will result in numerous street closures between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. the moast affected areas are expected to be south of Boulevard Gouin and north of rue notre-Dame, between boulevard Pie-IX and the eastern part of the island.
The city has stated that roads will reopen “by section, as the cyclists went on.” Sabourin added, “The circuit is, sum everything, simpler than usual. On the one hand, the city center is not affected, but above all,all people west of Pie-IX are not affected.”
In addition to road closures, parking restrictions will be enforced along the cycling routes. The city advises motorists to “respect parking prohibitions, plan their trips and opt for public transport or to consider choice routes”.
Vehicles parked in violation will be towed starting at 1 p.m. Friday in anticipation of the Tour la Nuit, incurring a cost of $197, which includes the fine and towing fees. “Just for the tour at night, we have 18 towing trucks that will be available,” the spokesperson noted.
To mitigate traffic disruptions, six crossing points will remain open to motorists: the Olivier-Charbonneau bridge, the Metropolitan motorway, rue Sherbrooke, Avenue Filignery, the Jean-Baptiste-Legardeur bridge and the Charles-de Gaulle bridge.
Affected Areas and Alternative Routes
Montreal-Est and Pointe-aux-Trembles are expected to be particularly impacted, with the southern portions perhaps becoming landlocked. The jean-Baptiste-Legardeur bridge towards Repentigny will serve as the primary access and exit route for these areas.
