the annual general meeting of a local blood donation association revealed a concerning trend: dwindling attendance despite a year marked by important activity and a pressing need for blood and plasma. This issue mirrors a broader national challenge, as the constant drop in donations year after year
was lamented by multiple speakers, including representatives from the Departmental Union of Blood Donors and medical professionals.
This decline occurs against a backdrop of increasing demand for blood products, notably plasma, which is crucial for treating various medical conditions. According too recent statistics from the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds.This highlights the critical importance of maintaining a stable and growing donor base.
A Year of Activity: Collections and Community Engagement
Despite the attendance concerns, the association’s president, Bernard Saigné, highlighted a year of active engagement, including participation in numerous conferences and meetings. The association organized four blood drives in 2024, each attracting an average of 36 donors. saigné also emphasized the vital role of volunteers, praising their warm and effective welcome
at each collection event. The association also prioritizes supporting local businesses by purchasing refreshments from Montreal merchants for donors.

Treasurer Xavier Falliu presented the association’s financial report for 2024, revealing a nearly balanced budget. Despite a slight deficit, the association remains in good financial health. Both the activity report and the financial report were unanimously approved by the attendees.

Local mayor Bernard Breil suggested initiatives to engage younger generations, advocating for blood donation education in schools. he also proposed having a doctor present during sampling sessions to explain the procedure and alleviate any anxieties.Breil pledged the municipality’s full support to the association, including a potential advertising campaign in local businesses to promote upcoming blood drives.
