Montreal’s top goaltending talent Jacob Fowler has only played 5 games in the NHL so far, but he’s already proving he has what it takes to become one of the best in the world for years to come. Fowler’s presence throws sticks at the feet of Sam Montembeault, who suddenly seems to be in the third goalie position.
Montreal has been in an interesting situation since the trade of Jacob Fowler. He has three capable goalkeepers in his squad, which he alternates gradually. Since the beginning of December, however, Samuel Montembeault, who has held the role of number one until now, has started only two games, which he lost. His place is gradually being taken by the twenty-one-year-old Fowler, who forms a striking tandem with Jakub Dobeš.
Not only does Fowler give the Habs a chance to win every game he starts, but he also builds the confidence of the players who play in front of him. Overall, Fowler is settling in very well in the NHL so far. The Habs players seem to be getting more comfortable with each game Fowler plays.
The truth is that Samuel Montembeault’s lack of confidence has rubbed off on the players, which has hurt the team for a while. Jakub Dobeš performed well in most of his starts, but he still lacks some consistency. The Habs were able to win games with Dobeš, but they couldn’t do it at all with Montembeault. Thus came a new impulse and the calling of a young talent.
Along with Fowler and other Habs players, Dobeš has recently returned to form. At the beginning of the season, he recorded an excellent balance of 6 wins, with which he started the current season. After that, unfortunately, he experienced a few weeks where he did not do well, but eventually he got back into shape. However, Montembeault still hasn’t found his. This may result in his termination from the organization.
The Canadian goalkeeper was already sent to the farm once, but Montreal recalled him after a few days. But it is clear that the team will not support three goalkeepers. And it seems that the so-called black Peter will fall on Montembeault. A big factor will also be the performance of Fowler, who at his age has to catch as much as possible, but it seems that the NHL has suited him.
Last season, Montembeault was an important part of Montreal’s campaign. He was not only a goalkeeper, he was one of the main reasons for the return to the top eight of the Eastern Conference. Montembeault like that is hard to find this season. His confidence has clearly suffered and the results reflect it.
