Monster Hunter Wilds was among the protagonists of the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025, where he also received the Users’ Choice Award, a prize assigned based on public votes. A recognition obtained despite the strong criticism aimed at the game, linked not only to the performance on PC, but also to a challenge level judged too low and not very stimulating by historical fans of the series.
A criticism that director Yuya Tokuda and series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto recognized as well-founded and which proved to be valuable feedback for the free updates published after launch. These contents were calibrated to raise the level of difficulty and make it more satisfying, so much so that Tokuda invites those who abandoned the title in the first few weeks to now give it a second chance.
Tokuda invites you to return to Wilds
Interviewed by IGN Japan during the PlayStation Partner Awards ceremony, Tokuda explained that the initial difficulty of Wilds had been calibrated taking into account the problems encountered by new players who were approaching the series for the first time. If this choice helped novice hunters and led to the introduction of the Precision mode, on the other hand it led to the absence of content capable of satisfying veterans.
“We looked at places where beginners tended to get stuck, including Monster Hunter: World,” Tokuda said. “We worked on these aspects one by one make it easier for new players to overcome obstacles how to reach certain monsters or create specific types of armor. Furthermore, we have tried to introduce as many new features as possible that are useful for both beginners and experienced users, such as Focus Mode. This time, in an attempt to make the game accessible to new players and those who hadn’t managed to complete it in the past, I think the difficulty curve was a little lacking for more experienced users.”
“Monster Hunter is a title that receives regular updates, but player opinions were very valuable during the development process. To make Monster Hunter Wilds better, fan voices gave us strength,” he added. “If you completed the game shortly after release and then stopped, I would be grateful if you would take it back.”
Monster Hunter Wilds reveals the new endgame upgrades of Title Update 4 and how to prepare for Gogmazios
Tsujimoto also joined the discussion, underlining that, despite the criticism received by Wilds, it will certainly not be one or two missteps that will decree the end of the series.
“Despite the problems addressed by this chapter, you shouldn’t expect Monster Hunter to disappear. Obviously we don’t intend to stop the series here. We intend to continue and want more and more people to be able to play. Additionally, we would like to think about projects beyond video games to further expand the potential of the Monster Hunter IP.”
As you may know, Wilds post-launch updates have added the arch-tempered monsters and missions with a 9-star challenge levelwhich significantly increased the difficulty of the endgame. Title Update 4 will arrive on December 16th, which among the new features also includes the Gogmazios, a gigantic elderly dragon that promises to give even the most skilled hunters a further hard time.
