«Rest in peace little Domenico». With this banner displayed on the balustrade of the North Stand at half-time and left for the entire second half, the Genoa fans wanted to remember the child who passed away yesterday in Naples, Domenico Caliendo aged 2 and a half, due to complications following the transplant of a damaged heart.

Nola in mourning for Domenico, the funeral will be in the cathedral
The date of the funeral of little Domenico, the 2 year and four month old boy who died yesterday morning at the Monaldi hospital in Naples, has not yet been set. The funeral rite, as we learn from sources of the Archbishop’s Curia of Nola, should in any case be held in the cathedral church. The parish of the little boy’s family is that of Santa Maria della Stella, not far from via Circumvallazione, where in recent days there was also a moment of prayer. The choice of the cathedral church, which stands in front of the Municipal Palace, was dictated by several reasons, including the greater capacity and as a sign of participation in the mourning of the entire community. Tomorrow Mayor Andrea Ruggiero will go to Domenico’s mother, Patrizia, who today – destroyed by pain and days of profound tension – remained at home. The little boy’s mother has expressed her desire to start a foundation named after her son. The Municipality has already taken action to evaluate ways of supporting the request. Domenico’s family is originally from Taurano, a town in the Vallo di Lauro, a few kilometers from Nola. But the mother and the father’s little one, as some shopkeepers in via Circumvallazione say, immediately after the transfer made themselves “well-loved by everyone”. “Discreet, polite people,” says a local bartender. Some merchants also had posters printed expressing their participation in the mourning: «We have been following the story with apprehension. In these two months Domenico has become our son. We won’t forget it even when the press turns the spotlight on this painful affair.”
A couple brings flowers to Domenico, “to remember our daughter’s ordeal”
Also paying homage to little Domenico outside the Monaldi hospital in Naples are Alessandro and Daniela, parents of Sara, who died after suffering from leukemia at just 16 years old. From Naples to Rome for treatment, 377 days of ordeal and then the end. The sad story is told in the book ‘Fragile like you, strong like love’ and to keep their daughter’s memory alive, the parents set up the association ‘Sara’s creations’ in Naples. «Our daughter fell ill with leukemia in 2020 and, when we were convinced and sure of her recovery, after three years the disease returned and we had to flee to Rome. We had to stay here for 377 days, trying to cure her with an experimental treatment that was recommended to us by the doctors. Which experimental treatment, unfortunately, in an attempt to save her caused our daughter to lose her dignity. A dignity that human beings must still have.” Today Alessandro and Daniela are here because what happened to Domenico has once again awakened in them the memory “of those tragic moments and situations in intensive care where Sara was for 50 days”. Until the epilogue on January 4, 2025. In light of what happened, Alessandro says: «We must have human dignity and medicine must have this human dignity, hospitals must protect it because going beyond therapeutic obstinacy is something that in the end does not provide benefits: you lose your dignity, you lose what life is». Alessandro says he is convinced that «today Domenico is in Sara’s arms and both of them will give the strength to many people to be able to see life in a more positive way».
The lawyer, tomorrow at the notary for the foundation named after Domenico
Tomorrow Domenico’s mother, Patrizia Mercolini, and her lawyer Francesco Petruzzi will go, as announced yesterday, to a Neapolitan notary to set up the fundraising committee, the first step towards the birth of the foundation named after the child. Petruzzi confirms this: «We will be at 12 at the notary in Via dei Mille in Naples. The law provides that a foundation can be created after having raised at least a capital of 30 thousand euros and tomorrow we will begin this process.” The aim of the foundation, as anticipated yesterday by Patrizia, will be to help children in medical difficulty and victims of medical malpractice.
The lawyer, from Monaldi incomplete medical records on Domenico
«The perfusion diary is missing from Domenico’s medical record that Monaldi sent us, i.e. the tracing of the extracorporeal circulation which would demonstrate the exact moment in which the child’s heart was removed, before implanting the damaged one». The lawyer Francesco Petruzzi, defender of the family of the little boy who died yesterday, told ANSA. “Tomorrow morning I will return to the prosecutor’s office to report the anomaly and ask them to acquire this document, if they have not already done so.”
Born at the Monaldi
The investigative activities of the Nas carabinieri continue today, Sunday, on the death of little Domenico, who died yesterday at Monaldi. The soldiers returned to the Neapolitan hospital this morning as part of the investigation conducted by the Neapolitan prosecutor’s office (with deputy Ricci and deputy Tittaferrante) after having proceeded yesterday with the notification of warrants to the six health workers under investigation, with the seizure of their cell phones.
