- A customer discovered a moldy ham in a Migros partner branch.
- The M-Budget country smoked ham was completely covered in mold.
- Migros explains the mold with leaky packaging.
- Such products should be sorted out during inspections.
A news scout made an unsavory discovery in a Migros Partner branch in Pratteln BL.
While shopping, he saw a country smoked ham from M-Budget hanging around – CHF 3.90 for 100 grams. The expiry date is dated January 14, 2026, but the meat no longer looked edible: the ham was covered in mold. The packaging behind it was also affected by mold, reports the news scout.
This doesn’t appear to be the first mold shock. If you go to the Migros product page, the reviews for the country smoked ham are mostly positive – but a year ago Andrei already commented: “1 star because the product had mold even though it was still valid for 1 month.”
Migros: “Mistake that we very much regret”
“In fact, a product is not allowed to be sold in this condition,” writes Migros spokeswoman Mélanie Honegger when asked by 20 Minutes. If the packaging of an unrefrigerated product is leaking, oxygen can get in and the ham will develop mold, she explains.
How much trust do you have in the quality assurance of Swiss supermarkets?
“However, relevant products should of course be discovered and sorted out during inspections.” “We are sorry that this did not happen in this case and is simply a mistake that we very much regret.” The ham comes from a current batch and “must have been delivered to the store last week”. No complaints were received.
Was the ham bought and then put back?
As Migros announced after the publication of this article, the surveillance cameras in the store have now been checked. Video footage shows an unknown person entering the store with the product, hanging it on the shelf and taking a photo of it. Migros therefore distances itself from this incident – in the knowledge that isolated errors in packaging can never be ruled out.
