The Washington Capitals have announced that assistant coach Mitch Love has been placed on leave while the NHL conducts an investigation.

the specific reason for the investigation into Love has not been disclosed. though, ESPN reports that prior to his time with the Capitals, two teams that interviewed him for head coach positions received a letter containing accusations regarding Love’s personal behavior. A similar letter was also sent to the League.

according to ESPN, the NHL initiated its investigation this past summer. The Capitals reportedly suspended him after receiving information from the League.

Love, 41, transitioned to coaching after a career in the minor leagues, never playing in the NHL. He previously worked within the Calgary Flame system, serving as the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat. He joined the Capitals’ coaching staff in June 2023, under the leadership of head coach spencer Carbertry.
