Minnesota Military Deployment: Pentagon Prepares 1,500 Soldiers

by Archynetys News Desk

A Reuters report said the Pentagon is preparing a deployment with 1,500 soldiers to the state of Minnesota, where situations of violence have been experienced between the civilian population and ICE agents, in the midst of raids against immigrants.

The situation has become especially tense after the death of a woman named Renee Good, due to the shooting of an officer in the city of Minneapolis.

According to the report, these are special forces that are currently carrying out exercises in Alaska. These will be deployed in case the violence in Minnesota does not stop, they said.

According to El País, last Thursday Donald Trump had threatened to use the call Insurrection Law, to bring military forces to the site.

That provoked a quick response from the mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, who has already criticized the presence of ICE in that city.

“It would be a shocking measure. We do not need more federal agents to guarantee the safety of the people. We are safe,” he told NBC on Sunday.

In recent days, tensions between federal agents and the state’s residents have been increasing.

Members of ICE have fired tear gas and stun grenades to dissuade protests and protesters have used fireworks against the troops.

The last time it was used was in 1992, under George HW Bush (1989-1993) in California in response to civil unrest in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four white police officers accused of hitting an African-American driver.

For its part, the Minnesota National Guard has been “mobilized” by the governor to support local troops

“We are prepared and ready to respond. At the moment, we are not deployed on the streets of the city,” Andrea Tsuchiya, public relations officer for the Minnesota National Guard, explained to EFE.
