In Minnesota, disturbing events unfolded on Saturday, June 14, 2025, prior to President Donald Trump’s military parade in Washington, DC, and the ensuing protests. MSNBC reported that two Minnesota state lawmakers, Minnesota State Sen. John A. hoffman and Minnesota House Speaker Melissa hortman, both members of the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, were shot at their residences. Gov. Tim Walz addressed the media, providing details about the attack and the ongoing investigation.

Gov. Walz stated, “This was an act of targeted political violence.”

According to Minnesota officials, the suspect is still at large, prompting an extensive search. The suspect reportedly impersonated a police officer convincingly, and their vehicle “looked exactly like a police vehicle.”

MSNBC confirmed that Melissa Hortman was killed, while John A. Hoffman was alive but undergoing surgery at the time of the press conference. MSNBC’s Ali Velshi and former FBI special agent John D’Amico expressed surprise at the attack’s sophistication, noting the suspect’s use of a taser, a gun, and a fake police vehicle.

Following the tragedy, a No Kings Day protest in Minneapolis was canceled.

Minnesota officials indicated that the suspect possessed a “manifesto” and a list of potential assassination targets in their vehicle.
