Ministry of Home Affairs Aims to Boost Rice Harvests and Prepare for Floods
In a push to stabilize rice prices and ensure food security, the Ministry of Home Affairs is encouraging regional governments across Indonesia to optimize rice harvests in their areas.
Improving Rice Milling Machine Quality
A critical aspect of this initiative involves using high-quality rice milling machines. According to Tomsi Tohir, the acting secretary general of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the quality of these machines directly affects how much rice the state logistics company, Bulog, can accept.
Tohir highlighted that subpar machines produce lower quality rice, which may not meet Bulog’s standards. This not only impacts the volume of rice Bulog can absorb but also affects overall rice supply and pricing.
Preparing for the Rainy Season
The ministry is also emphasizing the importance of proactive measures against flooding, especially as forecasts indicate heavy rainfall from December 2024 to February 2025.
“Regions expecting high rainfall should take steps to protect agricultural areas from flooding,” Tohir stated. This includes implementing early warning systems and, if necessary, allocating budgets for weather modification efforts.
Learning from Jakarta’s Example
The Jakarta provincial government is already setting a precedent by allocating funds for weather modification. Tohir encourages other regions, particularly those prone to flooding, to adopt similar strategies and communicate these efforts effectively.
“I urge regional governors, especially those in flood-prone areas, to communicate this initiative widely,” he emphasized.
Increasing Rice Reserves
The importance of maintaining adequate rice supplies extends beyond local efforts. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, announced an increase in the target for government rice reserves to 2.5 million tons. This move is aimed at enhancing food self-sufficiency and ensuring stability in the market.
As of now, Indonesia’s national rice stock stands at eight million tons as of the end of the year, according to Hasan. The goal is to reach the new target to cushion against fluctuations in global markets and potential supply disruptions.

Conclusion
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ efforts to optimize rice harvesting and prepare for flooding demonstrate a proactive approach to ensuring food security and stabilizing rice prices. By improving the quality of rice milling machines and taking anticipatory measures, regional governments play a crucial role in safeguarding Indonesia’s agricultural sector.
As the rainy season approaches, the emphasis on flood preparedness will be more critical than ever. With increased government rice reserves, the nation is better positioned to defend against potential market instabilities.
