Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Enhances Free School Meal Program with Integrated Cold Storage

Jakarta – The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is leveraging Integrated Cold Storage (ICS) systems to maintain fish quality for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. This strategic move ensures that children receive fresh, high-quality protein in their meals.

ICS System Supports Healthy Meals in Kampar District

“One example of this initiative is the use of fish-based dishes in Kampar District, Riau,” stated Budi Sulistyo, Director General of Strengthening Marine and Fisheries Products Competitiveness. “The ICS system has become the primary supplier of catfish to six MBG kitchens serving 54 schools in the area.”

The ICS facility in Kampar is managed by PT Delta Mina Perkasa, boasting a capacity of 2 x 2.5 tons, along with an extra cold storage unit that holds up to 2 x 50 tons. This robust storage solution allows for the consistent provision of fresh fish, ensuring that students benefiting from the MBG program receive nutritious meals.

Boosting Local Economy through Circularity

Budi Sulistyo highlighted how the ICS system supports both the local economy and the environment through the circular economy model. This approach ensures that raw materials are continuously reused, optimizing resources and reducing waste. By sourcing catfish from local farmers, the facility ensures a sustainable supply chain for the MBG program.

PT Delta Mina Perkasa processes up to three tons of raw materials daily, yielding one ton of catfish fillets, all derived from local sources. This production cycle creates economic opportunities for catfish farmers in Kampar District, fostering a local industry that thrives on sustainability.

MMB Program Ensures Dietary Diversity

The MBG program includes a variety of protein sources, including fish dishes served in rotation. According to Sulistyo, this approach not only introduces children to different types of proteins but also supports local businesses. He encouraged greater involvement of local entities in the MBG program to enhance its success.

“The involvement of local businesses guarantees a steady supply of fresh, quality fish, benefiting both the program and the local community,” Sulistyo added. The successful implementation of the ICS system in Kampar demonstrates how government initiatives can positively impact public health and local economies simultaneously.

Government Support for Improved Nutrition

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono confirmed his ministry’s commitment to supporting the MBG program. His team is dedicated to utilizing local fishery products while considering regional preferences to maximize the nutritional value of the meals.

“We are fully prepared to integrate fisheries into the MBG program to improve protein intake, especially among children,” Trenggono stated. “This collaboration will not only provide children with essential nutrients but also bolster local marine industries.”

Impactful Use of Facilities

Zulfahmi, the head of the Kampar Fisheries Service, detailed that the ICS facility in Kampar was constructed by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in 2017 and has since been managed by PT Delta Mina Perkasa. This arrangement between the government and local business demonstrates a successful public-private partnership that benefits all stakeholders.

“Increasing fish consumption is not only beneficial for the health of our children but also drives the local economy,” Zulfahmi affirmed. The sharing of responsibilities between the government and local businesses creates a sustainable and robust food supply chain for the MBG program.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ use of Integrated Cold Storage systems in the MBG program exemplifies how strategic partnerships and innovative solutions can improve public health and support local economies. By integrating fish-based meals sourced from local farmers, the program not only ensures quality nutrition but also promotes sustainable practices.

As the initiative continues to evolve, it will likely serve as a model for other locations, demonstrating how government programs can be tailored to meet the unique needs of local communities.
