Controversial Remarks Spark Debate Over Storm Éowyn’s Impact on ESB and Consumer Costs
Following the aftermath of Storm Éowyn, tensions have risen between the leadership of the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and politicians over a series of controversial statements. The spotlight has fallen on ESB’s Chief Executive, Paddy Hayes, and his comments regarding potential cost increases for consumers as a result of storm damage.
Government Criticizes ESB Chief’s Remarks
In a statement during a Dáil session, Minister of State Jerry Buttimer expressed his disapproval of Paddy Hayes’ comments. Buttimer deemed the executive’s remarks “inappropriate” at a time when leadership was crucial. He advised Hayes to reflect on his statements.
“In regard to the ESB’s Chief Executive, I think his remarks were inappropriate as people were seeking leadership from him. I think he should reflect on what he did say,” Buttimer said in the Dáil.
Labour Leader Denounces ESB’s Proposed Cost Recovery Plan
The Labour Party leader, Ivana Bacik, also expressed strong dissatisfaction with Hayes’ comments on RTÉ Radio’s Today with Claire Byrne. Bacik described Hayes’ suggestion that ESB customers may face higher bills due to Storm Éowyn as “absolutely unacceptable.”
“We want to ensure that the ESB does not pass on the costs of repairs to consumers. The State must step up on this,” Bacik emphasized.
