Culinary Stars Support Youth Rugby Dream
The Hamburg Rugby Club (HRC) is buzzing with activity as its youth teams prepare for the “Mini X Nations” tournament in Milan. To support this aspiring endeavor, a special benefit dinner is being hosted, spearheaded by renowned restaurateurs Sophie Lehmann adn Thomas Imbusch.
On Monday, up to 80 guests will gather at the esteemed “100/200 kitchen,” located at brandshofer Deich. Here, they will experience Imbusch’s culinary artistry paired with Lehmann’s expertly curated wine selection. Each seat at this exclusive dinner costs €200, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Hamburg Rugby Club’s youth program.This initiative aims to foster integration, encourage greater female participation in the sport, and fund the travel expenses for approximately 75 young athletes to attend the prestigious “Mini X Nations” tournament in Milan in early May, a competition that draws participants from across Europe.
“Mini X Nations”: A Stepping Stone for Young Athletes
Toni Yebra,a Bundesliga player and U14 coach for HRC,emphasizes the transformative impact of such international trips. These experiences help the children grow into cosmopolitan and responsible individuals,
he states.yebra, a product of the HRC youth system himself, is passionate about expanding access to rugby and making holiday camps more appealing to girls. Currently, HRC boasts 140 young players, with girls representing 10% of the total. An increase in female participation could pave the way for the club to establish a dedicated women’s fifteen-a-side team. Currently, female players are participating in the faster-paced seven-a-side rugby, with a team competing in Wismar this weekend.

Fostering a welcoming and Inclusive Surroundings
Godwina Kimonima, who discovered rugby in 2020, highlights the welcoming atmosphere at HRC. I was received with open arms, the surrounding around it is a lot,
she says, praising the club’s family-like environment. Kimonima hopes that the upcoming World Cup in England will generate a surge of interest in the sport, further boosting participation.
Her teammate, Lara Maunder, describes Kimonima as a very good ball bearer.
Maunder herself is a skilled player, having recently competed for SC Neuenheim in the German championship final, narrowly losing to their rivals from Heidelberg rowing club.
