Mike Pender: Finding Queen Maxima Among Florida-Breds

Mike Pender: Finding Hidden Gems in the Thoroughbred World

For over a decade and a half, Mike Pender proved himself as a trainer on the ultra-competitive Southern California circuit. He won Grade I races with lower-profile horses like Ultimate Eagle (Mizzen Mast) and Jeranimo (Congaree), each costing just $70,000 at the breeze-up sales for his client, B.J. Wright.

Pender’s Career Shift

About a year after piloting Lombo (Graydar) to an 8-1 upset in the 2018 GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes, Pender shifted his focus to bloodstock management. Despite the loss of Wright, a key financial supporter, his expertise and due diligence allowed him to continue his successful career under radar.

Success with Young Fillies

Two of Pender’s latest success stories are Florida-bred fillies by Bucchero, each purchased for $40,000 at the OBS June Sale. Neither had pre-assigned owners, adding layers of risk. However, Pender’s instinct and rigorous evaluation process have always led to promising outcomes.

“If I buy these, am I OK owning these myself?” Pender often asks himself. At 59, valentines day-passed just recently, Pender’s sharp intuition remains his greatest asset. “That’s a really tough question for a lot of bloodstock agents.”

Queen Maxima: Hurdling Obstacles

A chestnut daughter of Corfu Lady, Queen Maxima caught Pender’s eye at the OBS June Sale after breezing a mind-blowing :20 3/5 in a quarter mile. Her lineage links back to Halo’s Image, a successful Florida-based handicap horse. Despite her promising start, her career took some unexpected turns.

Her high-profile debut win on turf in August was followed by a misplaced 10th-place finish at a mile in early September. This set the stage for a stand-out runner-up effort in the Unzip Me Stakes at Santa Anita, where she challenged the favorite, Toupie (Uncle Mo), ahead of his big win in the Las Cienegas Stakes.

Another setback hit Queen Maxima at Del Mar in November but she bounced back spectacularly with two consecutive wins for trainer Jeff Mullins. These victories showcased her remarkable versatility and late acceleration, traits Pender sees as her greatest strengths.

Queen Maxima’s performances have earned her a spot back in stakes competition, the Wishing Well Stakes, with plans to potentially try dirt tracks as well.

Rodin With a Why: Small and Mighty

“Robin With a Why” defied expectations with her maiden debut at nearly 19-1 odds, running well despite a last-race loss. Pender acquired Robin, a big, lanky filly with a competitive spirit, from trainer Paul Aguirre.

Her Jan. 19 maiden special weight turf sprint ended with a close second to Canto Della Terra (Ire), who showed strong Irish form. Despite her rough first start, Robin’s unique traits and fiery attitude make her a standout prospect.

While Queen Maxima and Robin represent very different types with distinct personalities, Pender sees their acquisition as testament to the diversity of thoroughbred talent. “A good horse can come from any sire,” Pender emphasizes.

Affection for Bucchero

Pender’s affection for Bucchero, now standing at Ironhorse Stallions, runs deep. He admires Bucchero’s affordability and his ability to produce runners capable of battling to the finish line. “He’s a sire that can get you any kind. I just love that in a stallion.” Pender’s admiration for Bucchero’s abilities is evident in his continued support of the stallion’s progeny.

Other notable acquisitions by Pender include Artislas (Catalina Cruiser), winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf for Queen Maxima’s owners, and Hidden Connection (Connect), a filly who achieved graded winner status at two and later sold for $1.5 million at Keeneland November.

Conclusion: Legacy and Passion

Mike Pender’s journey from trainer to bloodstock agent exemplifies the passion and dedication required in the thoroughbred world. Each purchase tells a story of risk, resilience, and rewarding outcomes—highlighting Pender’s keen judgment and strong instincts.

Pender’s continued success stories with horses like Queen Maxima and Robin With a Why demonstrate his ability to identify and nurture talent, even under challenging conditions. As he moves forward, Pender’s legacy in the thoroughbred community continues to grow.
