Midlife Depression & Dementia Risk: Latest Research

London – British public sector workers who reported depressive symptoms in a questionnaire in their mid-50s were more likely to develop dementia two decades later. The increased risk was shown in a study Lancet Psychiatry (2025; DOI: 10.1016/S2215-0366(25)00331-1) can be attributed to 6 symptoms.

The Whitehall II study has examined the influence of stress on heart health among civil servants from the London government district since 1985-88. Between 1997-99, state employees with an average age of 55.7 years filled out the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-30) on mental illness and particularly depression.
