Microsoft Launches €100,000 Community Fund for South Dublin

Microsoft has unveiled a €100,000 community fund specifically designed to support individuals, community groups, schools, and non-profits within the South Dublin County Council area. This initiative aims to foster sustainable development and enhance digital skills in the region.

Funding for Innovative Projects

The fund offers funding for a range of proven initiatives that have demonstrated positive outcomes elsewhere. Proposed projects include:

  • A citizen monitoring scheme to safeguard water sources
  • Programmes to develop school gardens and promote local biodiversity
  • Projects addressing plastic pollution by turning waste into valuable materials

Application Process and Details

Applications are open to all eligible applicants within the South Dublin County Council area. Each successful project can receive up to €4,500. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with applicants required to complete a 30-day challenge to unlock funding. This challenge involves developing a clear project action plan.

Building on Previous Investments

This latest community fund is part of a broader effort by Microsoft to invest in local communities. Since 2021, Microsoft has launched over 60 community projects focused on digital skill development and sustainability in the area. Additionally, Microsoft has invested more than €4 million in initiatives supporting sustainable and thriving communities near its data center in Clondalkin, benefiting over 16,000 local individuals since 2008.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Community

“As we expand our advanced data centers globally, it’s essential to acknowledge the central role communities play in this ecosystem,” stated Lavinia Morris, general manager of Microsoft data center operations for EMEA. “This new Microsoft Community Fund will bolster the pillars of our pledge, fostering community prosperity, enhancing well-being, and contributing to a sustainable future.”

Success Stories

Sandy Hazel, a recipient of Microsoft’s community fund in 2021, exemplifies the positive impact of these initiatives. She launched the Open Orchard project, which aimed to provide local children with hands-on experience in growing and harvesting their own fruit. Hazel explained, “The funding allowed us to get our idea off the ground and supported local nurseries, thus benefiting small businesses and reinforcing the sense of community.”

Cooperation with ChangeX

Niamh McKenna, co-founder and head of impact at ChangeX, highlighted the partnership with Microsoft. “Our collaboration has already empowered tens of thousands of local changemakers around the world, and we’re thrilled to extend that support in Dublin this year.”
