MotorsportMick Schumacher announces farewell to Formula 1
The 26-year-old could soon only race in the USA. The chances of his comeback in Formula 1 are now vanishingly small.
The son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher is taking a different path.
Michael Conroy/AP/dpaRacing driver Mick Schumacher is ending his involvement with the French endurance team Alpine after two years. «I am very grateful for the last two years. I learned so much on and off the track and am grateful to everyone who was a part of it,” wrote the son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher on Instagram.
It is still unclear where the 26-year-old will continue his career. However, it is expected that Schumacher will move to the USA in 2026 and compete in the IndyCar Series there for the first time. “Stay excited for 2026,” he wrote on Instagram about several photos from his Alpine time.
Schumacher recently completed his first IndyCar laps in Indianapolis in the car of the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team and then spoke openly about the fact that he could imagine a long-term sporting future in America. “I have different options, IndyCar is one of them,” Schumacher said. «I can’t yet say exactly what the chances are that I’ll drive here. I have to process the impressions and see what I really want.”
Schumacher initially hoped to return to Formula 1 next year, in which he had already driven for the US team Haas in 2021 and 2022. But once again he doesn’t get a driver’s seat, not even with the new Cadillac team. Since this year, after a stint as a reserve and test driver at Mercedes, he has concentrated entirely on his involvement in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Alpine. Schumacher’s chances of returning to Formula 1 currently remain extremely slim.
