It is designed to detect, track, intercept and neutralize various types of air strikes, including missile-drone attacks. Combining land, air, maritime and space defense platforms, it will greatly enhance Europe’s defense capabilities.
‘Open Architecture’ for NATO Allies
Leonardo CEO Roberto Cincolani said the system has an ‘open architecture’ design and is capable of interoperating with air defense systems of various countries. The system can integrate with and work with any country’s existing defense protocols.
The company CEO added that a joint team will be formed with the Italian Armed Forces to make modifications to the system as per defense requirements. Leonardo aims to have the project partially operational soon. They say the full system will be deployed and operational by 2028.
A rival to Elon Musk’s US ‘Golden Dome‘
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Elon Musk-owned SpaceX may receive $2 billion (200 crore) in federal funding to develop a massive network of satellites for US President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome project. It is an ‘Air Moving Target Indicator’ system capable of tracking missiles and aircraft. The Wall Street Journal reported that up to 600 satellites could be deployed as part of this to bolster the US defense system.
