With the MG4 hatchback, the Chinese automaker managed to gain a foothold in a typically European segment. And this despite the fact that the car was often criticized. The main criticisms were directed at the interior and the software, which is apparently addressed by the upgraded design recently revealed in Brazil.
The electric MG4 is among the most popular Chinese cars on the old continent. Over 70,000 units were sold in 2023 and over 50,000 units last year, but this year there was a major drop. After all, the offer of competitors is much larger. And the MG4 is getting old, which is especially evident in the interior.
In China, the MG4 was a complete flop, ending this year and being replaced by the second generation. It is a bit bigger and instead of driving the rear wheels, it turns only the front wheels. We will also see this new car in the Czech Republic next year, but the original four is not over yet. A facelift has already been confirmed, which will also appear in Europe.
But maybe he will only focus on the most criticized part of the car, i.e. the interior. The modernized version of the MG4 was shown in Brazil, and from the outside it looks completely identical. Inside, however, it surprises with a new interior, taken from the larger MGS5. It sits on the same Nebula platform and uses the same technology.

However, the interior is much better processed and thought out. For example, it brings back the physical climate control panel, albeit a very simple one. The software on the larger, 12.8″ display is also better tuned, which in the European version also allows for easy switching off of annoying mandatory assistants. In our experience, the software is also significantly better tuned in the MG5, while in the four it is full of errors even after years and still works quite slowly.
It’s a major change for the MG4, which also came with a new steering wheel and a different central tunnel to which the rotary gear selector was moved. The seats also feel better, with it apparent that the hard plastics of the dashboard have been replaced by upholstery in many places. The color combination of brown and beige is also new.
The Brazilian website shows all variants including the Xpower version with a new interior; however, the technique obviously remains the same. We will soon find out if the same modernization will appear in Europe, or if it will bring more here. The facelifted version should go on sale from next year, but it has not yet been confirmed for the Czech market.
