Boosting SME Growth Through E-Commerce: A Cross-Border collaboration

Unlocking Digital Opportunities for Small Businesses

The Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CCCE) and the Mexican Online Sales Association (AMVO) are forging closer ties to bolster the digital presence and capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This collaboration aims to address shared challenges and capitalize on the burgeoning e-commerce landscape in both nations.

Strategic Alignment: Digitization as a Catalyst for Growth

Both the CCCE, led by María Fernanda Quiñones, and AMVO recognize the pivotal role of digitization and e-commerce in driving SME success. Their joint efforts are focused on equipping SMEs with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital marketplace, emphasizing fair trade practices and export opportunities.

Pierre Claude Blaise, director General of AMVO, has been instrumental in highlighting the meaningful growth of online sales in Mexico, which now account for approximately 15% of total retail sales. This figure underscores the immense potential for SMEs to expand their reach and revenue streams through e-commerce.

Addressing SME Challenges: From Inception to Sustainability

The Mexican Ministry of Economy (SE) acknowledges the hurdles faced by new businesses. Statistics reveal that a significant proportion, 52 out of every 100 companies that begin operations do not exceed 2 years of life and 70 percent face administrative obstacles. This highlights the critical need for support and guidance to ensure long-term viability.

However, companies that manage to survive beyond the initial five years demonstrate remarkable resilience, often doubling their average lifespan. This underscores the importance of providing SMEs with the resources and expertise needed to navigate the early stages of business development.

Success Stories: Agro Digital Initiative in Colombia

Colombia’s “Agro Digital” initiative serves as a compelling example of how e-commerce can transform traditional sectors. By connecting organic farmers directly with consumers, the program has facilitated the sale of over one thousand tons of produce, including lemons and avocados. This demonstrates the power of digital platforms to create new market opportunities for agricultural producers.

It is not only to put a virtual store, an advice is required so as not to be exceeded by market demand and respond properly in time and cost for sale by reducing.

the Road ahead: Opportunities and Challenges

With 4.7 million MSMEs in Mexico and 495,000 in Colombia, the potential for growth is substantial. The collaboration between the CCCE, AMVO, and the Secretariat of Economy (SE) is crucial in providing SMEs with the support they need to overcome challenges and seize opportunities in the digital economy. This includes access to training, resources, and infrastructure to facilitate seamless online operations.
