Caro Quintero Awaits Decision on Potential Death Penalty
Rafael Caro Quintero, also known as “NARCOS NARCO,” faces a tense 90-day period as the United States Attorney General considers whether to pursue the death penalty against him.This development highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and hold cartel leaders accountable for their crimes.

Extradition of Mexican Drug Traffickers to the U.S.
the case of caro Quintero is not isolated. On Febuary 27, the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) and the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) announced the extradition of 29 Mexican drug traffickers to the United States. These individuals face charges related to drug trafficking and other serious offenses.

Caro Quintero’s Charges and Court Appearance
Caro Quintero, a prominent figure in the now-defunct Guadalajara cartel, is among those extradited. He is accused of the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, in addition to drug trafficking charges. During his second appearance in the Federal District Court of New York on March 26, Judge Frederic Block stipulated that the U.S.Prosecutor’s Office must decide within 90 days whether to seek the death penalty. Caro Quintero’s criminal history also includes founding the Sinaloa cartel and the Caborca cartel.
Potential for Other mexican narcos to Face Capital Punishment
Mike Vigil, former director of International Operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), suggests that Caro Quintero may not be the only Mexican drug trafficker facing the possibility of a death sentence.
Vicente Carrillo Fuentes: Another Possible Candidate

Vigil pointed to Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, brother of the infamous “Lord of the Heavens,” as another potential candidate. He noted that the accusations against Carrillo Fuentes, known as “The Viceroy,” are comparable to those against Caro Quintero.

Carrillo Fuentes took over leadership of the Juarez Cartel after his brother Amado Carrillo Fuentes’ death in July 1997. Vicente was apprehended on October 9,2014,in torreón,Coahuila,and sentenced to 28 years in prison in Mexico in mid-September 2021. In the U.S., he faces 46 charges in the Federal Court of the West District of Texas.
