Community Rallies Behind Paramedic Battling Rare Cancer

OD’Fallon, IL – A wave of support is sweeping through the O’Fallon and Shiloh communities as a local paramedic faces a battle with a rare form of blood cancer. Ryan Hodge, a 40-year-old paramedic with O’Fallon-Shiloh EMS, was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia in September after routine bloodwork revealed abnormal results.

Hairy Cell Leukemia: A Rare and Treatable Form of Blood Cancer

Hairy cell leukemia, though relatively rare, is a treatable form of blood cancer that primarily affects red blood cells. Hodge immediately began chemotherapy and is receiving continuous support from his dedicated work family. As a first responder who dedicates his life to helping others, this unexpected diagnosis has shaken his close-knit community.

"That’s why we get in this career field, to help other people. We don’t like it when we all of a sudden become the one needing help,” shared paramedic Marty Nungesser, a fellow member of Hodge’s department.

Community Unites to Support Hodge and His Family

Due to the intensity of his treatment and the potential for complications, Hodge is unable to work at this time. In an effort to alleviate financial burdens and offer a much-needed helping hand, his coworkers have organized a heartwarming fundraiser.

A T-shirt campaign, hosted on Bonfire, has already raised over $2,600 for Hodge and his family, which includes his wife and two young daughters.

"Christmas is coming up,” noted paramedic Alyssa Danielson. "We’re also organizing a gift drive to ensure his children have a magical Christmas. He’s a fighter, and is looking at a bright future, and we want to be there every step of the way."

The outpouring of love and support from the community reflects the deep respect and admiration for Ryan Hodge.

How You Can Help
