Meta, the company behind Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger, recently launched new fraud detection tools aimed at increasing user security. These new features are designed to alert users before they come into contact with suspicious activity and protect them from potential fraud attempts. The launch of these tools is part of Meta’s ongoing commitment to improving the security of its platforms and providing users with a safer online experience.
On Facebook, Meta is testing new warnings that inform users about suspicious friend requests. If a request comes from an account that shows signs of suspicious behavior, such as few mutual friends or a different country affiliation, the user will be asked to review the request. This measure is intended to help make it easier to decide whether to accept or block the request.
WhatsApp users will in future be protected by warnings about device associations. Scammers may try to trick users into linking their WhatsApp accounts to someone else’s device by posing as legitimate organizations. Meta explains that these warnings show users where the link request is coming from and alert them that it could be a scam.
Fraud detection for Messenger is also being expanded to more countries. However, Meta did not specify which countries were affected. With advanced fraud detection, when users receive suspicious messages from new contacts, they are advised to release the messages for AI-powered review. If fraud is detected, the user is encouraged to block or report the suspicious account.
Last year, Meta removed over 159 million fraudulent ads, 92% of which were deleted before users reported them. In addition, 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram that were linked to criminal fraud centers were removed. These measures underscore Meta’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its platforms and protecting users from fraudulent activity.
