“The forecast of an increase in duties towards those nations that have chosen to contribute to the security of Greenland is a mistake and I don’t agree with it.” Thus the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaking to journalists in Seoul, explaining that he had heard from Donald Trump in recent hours and that there was “a problem of understanding and communication” on the initiative of some EU countries which should not be read in an “anti-American” light. We need to “resume dialogue and avoid escalation”.
“We were also invited to be part of it. I think that Italy can play a leading role, we are ready to make our peace in the construction of the peace plan”, said the prime minister speaking to journalists in Seoul on the Board for Gaza.
“I am calling a meeting upon my return to take stock of the provision. I don’t know if it will be ready by Tuesday but we are working on it”, she added when asked about the new safety decree.
“There is no political problem with the League on this point”, explained the Prime Minister on the note with which the League, regarding Trump’s new duties on the countries that sent troops to Greenland, spoke of “the weak of Europe” who have the “craze” to send soldiers and reap their “bitter fruits”.
“I heard from both Donald Trump a few hours ago, to whom I told him what I think” and “the secretary general of NATO who confirms to me a job that” the Alliance “is starting to do. During the day I will also hear from the European leaders” and “I believe a meeting has been convened for now at Coreper level of the European Union”. The US president “seems to me to be interested in listening”. You can’t “make a shorthand of what I say to a colleague of mine”, he responded to requests to go into more detail. “I believe – he concluded – that in this phase it is very important to talk to each other”.
“I share the attention that the American presidency gives, as I have said many times, to Greenland and in general to the Arctic, which is a strategic area in which excessive interference by actors who may be hostile must clearly be avoided. But I believe that in this sense the desire of some European countries to send troops, to participate in greater security should be read, not in the sense of an initiative made towards the United States, but rather towards other actors”. The Prime Minister reiterated that “it seems to me that there was a problem of understanding and communication on this”.
