A New Predator Lurks in the Depths: Meet Dulcibella camanchaca

However, new research reveals a surprising truth: these depths teem with unique and fascinating creatures, like the recently discovered Dulcibella camanchaca, a large, active predatory amphipod.
Discovering a Hidden World
This remarkable crustacean, measuring nearly four centimeters long, was discovered in the Atacama Trench, a deep-sea canyon off the coast of Chile. This isolated trench, exceeding depths of 8,000 meters, is home to a unique array of endemic species.
Named after "darkness" in the languages of the Andes region, Dulcibella camanchaca is a fast-swimming predator equipped with specialized raptorial appendages for capturing smaller amphipods. Its existence highlights the Atacama Trench as a biodiversity hotspot, with many more undiscovered species potentially lurking within its depths.
How Was Dulcibella camanchaca Found?
This exciting discovery was made during the 2023 Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System (IDOOS) Expedition. Four specimens of Dulcibella camanchaca were collected at a depth of 7,902 meters using a lander vehicle equipped with baited traps and scientific instruments.
Following collection, the specimens were analyzed at the Universidad de Concepción, revealing their unique morphology and genetic traits, confirming their status as a new species and, excitingly, a new genus.
