Medellín Boosts Vaccination Efforts Ahead of Holy Week Travel

Protect Your Journey: Free Yellow Fever and Measles Vaccinations Available

As Holy Week approaches and travel increases, the Medellín District Administration is proactively intensifying its campaign to provide free vaccination against yellow fever and measles. These preventable diseases pose significant health risks, especially for those venturing into tropical or international destinations. Ensuring travelers are protected is a key priority for public health officials.

Yellow Fever: A Single Dose for Lifelong Protection

The yellow fever vaccine, a critical preventative measure, is administered as a single, lifetime dose, according to the Ministry of Health. For optimal protection, it’s recommended to receive the vaccine at least 10 days before traveling. Vaccination is mandatory for children aged 18 months and older, as well as adults between 1 and 59 years old who reside in or are traveling to high-risk municipalities.

Convenient Vaccination Locations Available

To enhance accessibility, temporary vaccination points will be operational from April 14th to 16th at the following locations:

  • North Terminal (Floor 1,Local 9881)
  • South Terminal (Floor 1,Arrival Halls)
  • Plaza de la Libertad (Next to the Passport Delivery Office)

Operating hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the terminals and from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Plaza de la Libertad.

High-Risk Areas and Special Considerations

Within Antioquia, municipalities such as Dabeiba, Mutatá, Turbo, and Yondó are considered to be at higher risk for yellow fever transmission. Individuals over 60 years of age or children between 9 and 11 months requiring the vaccine must obtain authorization from the Ministry of Health through the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) District.

Travelers can also obtain the International Vaccination Certificate at locations such as the Guayabal Health Centre, Immunological Services Previm, and CAVA.

Measles Prevention: Ensuring Complete Vaccination

The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of verifying vaccination status against measles, a highly contagious viral disease. In Colombia, the triple viral (MMR) vaccine is administered in two mandatory doses: at 12 months and 18 months of age. maintaining an up-to-date vaccination record is crucial for preventing outbreaks and protecting public health.

“You have to be up to date with our vaccination card, especially with yellow fever and measles. If we are going to travel to tropics, vaccinating 10 days before it is essential. Remember that it has no cost and that you can access it in the IPS,”

Aida rendón Luz, Undersecretary of Public Health

Recognizing Symptoms and Seeking prompt Medical Attention

Should you experience symptoms such as high fever, skin rashes, nasal discharge, or conjunctivitis, it is indeed strongly advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare provider (IPS).
