Medellín: Boy Dies in Gasoline Burning Incident – 4-Year-Old Tragedy

A four-year-old boy died in the last few hours at the San Vicente Fundación Hospital in Medellín, due to burns suffered after another minor threw a container of gasoline at him outside a home in the Prado neighborhood, in the center of Medellín.

The death of this child occurred last Thursday in this healthcare center, where he was hospitalized for several days, trying to recover from the second and third degree injuries he suffered from the fire that came from the fuel bottle.

The events were recorded on Carrera 49 and Calle 64, in this neighborhood of commune 10 (La Candelaria), when several minors were playing outside a home.

According to the court report, one of the minors took gasoline and poured it into the container in question. Immediately afterwards, he set it on fire and threw it forward, without realizing that the affected child, identified as Leandro Saldarriaga Martínez, was in front.

Seriously injured, his family immediately took him to this healthcare center, where he was treated for the multiple burns suffered on his face and extremities, but after several days of treatment he died.

The authorities are advancing in the investigations to fully establish under what circumstances the launch of this element occurred and so far no process has been initiated against the parents of the person responsible for these events.

To avoid this type of accident, experts reiterate their call to leave any fuel within the reach of minors to avoid risks such as consumption or improper use of it.

Likewise, during the New Year’s Eve season, children are asked to stay away from hot liquids or gunpowder to avoid burn emergencies.
