Yankees Land Max Fried: A Major Starting Pitching Boost
In a move poised to solidify their dominance, the New York Yankees have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Max Fried to a massive eight-year, $218 million contract. This acquisition signifies a major investment in pitching, adding a proven ace to a staff already boasting Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes.
Fried’s Track Record: A Proven Ace
Fried has consistently demonstrated his elite capabilities on the mound. Over the past two seasons, he’s posted a stellar 2.66 ERA across nearly 500 innings, showcasing remarkable consistency and dominance. His ability to manage contact and generate ground balls has further solidified his status as a top-tier starter.
Analyzing Fried’s Potential Impact:
This signing drastically enhances the Yankees’ starting rotation, considering his track record of success and his effectiveness across a full season.
As R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports remarked, “We wanted to print a complete list of left-handed starting pitchers with a better ERA+ than Fried since the beginning of the 2020 season, but we ran into a problem when we went to compile the names. You see, no sinister hurler who had a decent amount of innings (min. 200 combined) actually placed ahead of him in that metric. Oh well. Blame Fried’s sustained excellence on his ability to manage contact. He ranked in the 95th percentile in average exit velocity last season, and he did it while generating nearly 60% ground balls for a second consecutive year. The biggest knock on Fried is his innings count, as he’s cleared the 180-threshold just once in his career. Given the league’s direction over the past decade, we’re not inclined to think that’ll hurt him.
A New Era for the Bronx Bombers
Max Fried’s arrival signifies a bold and decisive move by the Yankees to become contenders for a World Series title. With a strengthened rotation and a potent offense, they are poised to make a serious run in 2024 and beyond.
