Mary Robinson Accuses Donald Trump of Spreading ‘Lies’ on Energy Policy

Former Irish President Mary Robinson has taken a strong stance against President Donald Trump’s energy policies, labeling them as based on“lies” that are spread and amplified by social media.

Robinson’s Criticism in London

During an interview in Kilburn, London, Robinson made her case. The event was part of a screening of a Mary Robinson documentary held at the Kiln theatre and cinema, organized by Irish Film and Television UK. Robinson, who is 80, said she wasn’t concerned about potential backlash for her comments.

“I recognise I am in a position to [speak out]. I’m not looking for a job. I don’t have to worry about my future. I can speak and I think The Elders must speak,” she said. The Elders is a group of independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights.

Challenging Trump’s Executive Order

Robinson criticized a recent executive order signed by Trump declaring a“national energy emergency.” The order cited insufficient energy supply in the US and urged expansion of the oil and gas industry using federal laws, such as the Defense Production Act. This legislation allows the US government to mobilize private assets to embark on national objectives.

“As for ‘drill baby drill’ and that executive order – there is no energy emergency in the US. It’s all lies. The US has produced more crude oil in the last six years than any other country in the world,” Robinson stated, emphasizing her belief in factual integrity.

“The US is also the leader on gas. It is exporting. There is no energy emergency. It is lies amplified by social media and we actually have to realise this. We are entering a world where a lot of what is being said is not the case,” she added.

Trump’s Withdrawal from Paris Agreement

Robinson also voiced her disapproval of Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement, an international pact aimed at combatting climate change. She firmly believes in the importance of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) policies, asserting that they are beneficial for business.

“DEI policies are good things. They are good for business. Business leaders are standing up to that. I know we are in a difficult time, but we have to know what are lies,” she said.

Robinson’s Call to Resist

While Robinson acknowledges the “dystopian, bad picture” painted by Trump’s administration, she sees a level of resistance. “At one level, you have this dystopian, bad picture. [But] at another level you have a resistance to that. I’m not saying this is an easy time. It’s not. But there will always be people who can stand up.”

The Importance of Speaking Out

Robinson’s comments reflect an urgency in addressing the validity of information in the current political climate. By emphasizing the dangers of false narratives, she is encouraging a closer examination of policies and their impacts.

“We have to realise this. We are entering a world where a lot of what is being said is not the case,” she warned. Her stance aligns with efforts to combat misinformation and promote evidence-based decision-making.

Conclusion

Mary Robinson’s critique of Donald Trump’s policies underscores the importance of fact-checking and informed public debate. As someone with a proven track record of advocating for human rights and climate change, her voice carries significant weight.
