Marvel Rivals Thrives But NetEase Lays Off US Studio Team

The Paradox of Marvel Rivals: Success Followed by Layoffs at NetEase’s Seattle Studio

In the world of gaming, success is often fleeting, and even blockbuster hits can come with unexpected consequences. Marvel Rivals, a free-to-play hero shooter, has quickly become a hit for publisher NetEase, attracting over 20 million players shortly after its launch and consistently pulling in more than 250,000 daily concurrent players on Steam. However, the publisher’s recent decision to lay off employees from its Seattle-based studio stands in stark contrast to the game’s success.

An Unexpected Twist: Layoffs at the Heart of Success

Marvel Rivals game director Thaddeus Sasser broke the news of the layoffs on LinkedIn, expressing his bewilderment at the situation. “This is such a weird industry,” he wrote. “My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games… and were just laid off!”

While the exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed, level designers Jack Burrows and Garry McGee confirmed on LinkedIn that they were part of the layoffs. Burrows commented, “Welp, just got laid off from my job working on Marvel Rivals with NetEase. Was an enormous pleasure to work with my American coworkers who join me in this sad culling. Just couldn’t dodge that big boot I guess, no matter how big the success of the gig.”

McGee echoed a similar sentiment in his post, stating, “My team recently helped develop and launch Marvel Rivals, which turned out to be a bigger hit than any of us expected! Unfortunately, my team was also laid off. Strange times all across the industry indeed.”

Continuing Realignments in the Gaming Industry

The layoffs at NetEase’s Seattle studio are not isolated incidents. The Chinese giant has been undergoing several recent workforce changes. In November, NetEase paused operations at Worlds Untold, a project led by BioWare veteran Mac Walters. Similarly, Jar of Sparks, a studio founded by Halo Infinite’s design head Jerry Hook, halted work on its first game and began hunting for a new publisher in January.

This week, Swedish developer Liquid Swords, led by Avanlanche Studios’ Christofer Sundberg and backed by NetEase, faced an unspecified number of layoffs before launching its debut game.

A Devastating Year for the Gaming Industry

This string of layoffs reflects a broader challenge facing the gaming industry. Since the start of 2023, over 25,000 employees have lost their jobs. The losses continued into 2025, with another 900 layoffs recorded by early February. Notable casualties included popular game engines and studios like Unity, HiRez Studios, Sumo Digital, Ubisoft, Splash Damage, and Midnight Society.

The reasons behind these layoffs are manifold, often stemming from financial pressures, cancellations, or strategic shifts in company priorities. Marvel Rivals, despite its current success, may be just another victim in this ongoing tumult.

Industry Turmoil Spotlights Talent Mobility

For developers and game enthusiasts alike, these layoffs underscore the precarious nature of employment in the gaming industry. While success brings accolades and accolades, it is not a guarantee against restructuring or downsizing. The volatilty of this sector means that talented professionals must stay adaptable and ready for changes.

For the families and communities hit by these layoffs, the impact is undoubtedly significant. The gaming industry, known for its creativity and passion, often struggles to provide job security, challenging the delicate balance between innovation and sustainability.

The Future of NetEase and Its Studios

Moving forward, NetEase must navigate this tumultuous landscape carefully. The decision to lay off employees from a successful project raises questions about the company’s strategy and priorities. For its Seattle studio and other affected teams, the next steps are uncertain, but one thing is clear: resilience and adaptability will be crucial as they adjust to the changing tides of the gaming industry.

Marvel Rivals is a test case for how companies can support their teams through success. The studio’s achievements stand as a testament to the talent and hard work of its employees, even as the outcome of their project leaves many wondering about the future.

Conclusion: Lessons from the Gaming Industry

The story of Marvel Rivals and its aftermath serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry. Success is a double-edged sword, bringing both glory and challenges. As developers, players, and enthusiasts look to the future, this incident highlights the importance of stability, strategic planning, and a commitment to nurturing talent in an environment where change is the only constant.

For now, the industry watches with bated breath, hoping that this period of turbulence will not overshadow the successes that companies like NetEase continue to achieve.
