Australia and US Discuss Indo-Pacific Security concerns Amidst Shifting Global Landscape

Defence Minister richard Marles and US counterpart discuss AUKUS, China, and arms control as US outlines new Indo-Pacific security ambitions.

Amid growing concerns about the direction of US-China rivalry, defence Minister Richard Marles engaged in discussions with his US counterpart regarding Indo-Pacific security and the global arms control regime. The US defence chief is expected to outline America’s “new ambitions for Indo-Pacific security” in a keynote speech.

During their meeting, Mr. Marles and his counterpart addressed the AUKUS defence arrangement, under which Australia is scheduled to receive three Virginia-class submarines by the early 2030s. While Mr. marles did not confirm a guarantee, he stated, “We’re doing everything we can to see that happen”.

Mr. Marles also noted the dangerous decline of the global arms control regime from the Cold War era, with a key treaty between the US and Russia on nuclear proliferation due to expire next year. “this leaves no legally binding limits on the strategic nuclear arsenals of the two largest nuclear powers for the first time since 1972,” Mr. Marles stated.

He added that “China’s decision to pursue rapid nuclear modernisation and expansion, which aims in part to reach parity with or surpass the United States, is another reason the future of strategic arms control must be revitalised. and that is a tough and daunting project.”

Defence Spending and International Aid

“This leaves no legally binding limits on the strategic nuclear arsenals of the two largest nuclear powers for the first time since 1972.”

Defence spending has been a important issue, with previous plans to reach a 3 per cent GDP target projected to cost an extra $100 billion. Mr. Marles has previously defended the government’s plan to allocate an additional $50 billion to defence over the next decade. Current defence spending is just above 2 per cent of GDP, or $56 billion annually.

Mr. Marles did not comment on whether he raised concerns about the previous administration’s decision to dismantle US government aid programs that directed funding to essential services. He did say that he and his counterpart discussed ways to ensure peace and stability “and that does involve the support of developing countries”.
