Mario Mazzocca Death: Abruzzo Politics Mourns

Abruzzo politics is in mourning: farewell to Mario Mazzocca. The former regional councilor and mayor of Caramanico died in Chieti hospital, where he had been hospitalized following some health problems.

An architect by profession, he had worked as an architectural designer, urban and territorial planner, as well as as a technical consultant for organizations and private individuals.

Mazzocca had been mayor of Caramanico Terme for ten years, from 2004 to 2014. In Caramanico he had also run for mayor in 2019. Since 2014 he had been regional councilor for the Environment and Civil Protection in the centre-left council led by governor Luciano D’Alfonso. Then, in the same executive, the position of undersecretary to the presidency of the Abruzzo Region.

In 2018 he obtained the position of superintendent of the Special Office for post-earthquake reconstruction. In 2020 he published a book entitled “The notebooks of sustainability”, in which the reconstruction of his activity in the Region was accompanied by reflections on the subjects in question.

Mazzocca leaves behind his wife and two children.

“On my own behalf and on behalf of the entire regional council, I express deep condolences for the passing of Mario Mazzocca, former regional councilor for Civil Protection and undersecretary to the Presidency of the Abruzzo Region. A highly experienced public administrator, he dedicated his life to serving our communities with passion and competence. His passing represents a serious loss for our region. The deepest condolences and closeness of the regional institutions go to his family and all those who knew him. great pain.” This was declared by the president of the Abruzzo Region, Marco Marsilio.

“Comrade Mario Mazzocca has left us, news that leaves me dumbfounded, speechless, it is a profound regret. Today Abruzzo loses a person capable of passion and strength, indomitable but good and sensitive”, comments the vice-president of the regional council, Antonio Blasioli.

“Mario – he continues – was a mayor for Caramanico Terme who left a profound mark, leading the community for ten years (2004-2014) with passion and deep-rooted civil commitment. Two mandates as Mayor in which he accompanied Caramanico, with all the difficulties of the times, in a phase of transformation, with attention to the territory and the valorisation of the natural and cultural heritage”.

“I want to remember Mario for his honesty, for his ability to face challenges with serenity and determination, for his humanity that knew how to transform every meeting into a moment of dialogue and growth, a man who left an indelible mark in our lives and in the history of Abruzzo. His example invites us to believe that politics, when lived with heart and responsibility, can truly be service and gift. Thank you Mario for what you were and for what you will continue to be in the memory and heart of our community”, concludes Blasioli.
