Revving Up the Hype: First Impressions of Mario Kart world
The absence of a Mario Kart title on a Nintendo console feels almost heretical. Thus, the spotlight shines brightly on Nintendo’s latest iteration,Mario Kart World
,designed as a flagship title for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. At a recent Switch 2 experiance event in Paris, attendees were treated to an exclusive hands-on preview, with 48 consoles primed for adrenaline-fueled races. Our team was on the ground, eager to experience this new evolution of the beloved franchise.
Breaking the Mold: Embracing the Open World
How does one improve upon a game as finely tuned as mario Kart 8 Deluxe
? Nintendo’s answer appears to be: “make it open world!” After spending time with Mario Kart World
, the rationale becomes clear. This design choice feels innovative, intuitive, and, most importantly, genuinely fun.The shift towards a more expansive and interconnected world promises to redefine the Mario Kart experience.

Classic Roots, Fresh Gameplay: Grand Prix Evolved
Our hands-on began with a classic Grand Prix, promptly assuring us that Mario Kart World
remains true to its core. Races now feature a staggering 24 racers on the track – a record-breaking number for the series. This includes 22 AI-controlled opponents and one local competitor, creating an unprecedented level of on-screen chaos and excitement.
A Roster of Epic Proportions: Characters Beyond Inventiveness
The character selection screen is a sight to behold. While familiar faces like Mario, Peach, and Luigi (each with multiple style variations) are present, the roster also includes unexpected additions. We chose a cow character, directly inspired by the Moo Moo Meadows track from Mario Kart 8
. Absurd? Perhaps. Inspired? absolutely.
Dynamic Controls and Enhanced Realism
While Mario Kart World
initially appears familiar, the gameplay feels substantially different. The controls are more dynamic, with minor collisions causing the kart to tilt, influencing drift control.Although steering assist was mandatory during the demo, the handling already felt remarkably precise and responsive. This enhanced level of control adds a new layer of skill and strategy to the racing experience.

Chaos and Innovation on the Track
The races themselves are revitalized. The increased number of racers amplifies the chaos, while the tracks teem with life. Opponents crash into walls, while players can grind on railings like a Tony Hawk pro. New items, such as a coin-generating golden shield and speed-boosting pancakes, add further strategic depth.
Seamless Transitions: The Open World Connection
Notably, most circuits appear to consist of a single, expansive lap rather then the traditional three. Between races, players navigate an open intermediate world to reach the next course, with their performance in this transition impacting their overall ranking and starting position. For example, we raced across a vast desert highway to reach the next challenge, seamlessly blending exploration with competition.

knockout Mode: High-Octane Elimination Racing
The new modes truly elevate Mario Kart World
.The knockout mode tasks players with reaching checkpoints, with the last-place racers being eliminated. This mode is reminiscent of elimination races in the Need for Speed series, but with 24 karts, projectile items, and unadulterated mayhem. the result was a cacophony of cheers and frustrated shouts in Paris, showcasing Mario Kart at its most exhilarating.
Freeroam Freedom: Exploring the Boundaries
we also experienced the new Freeroam option. While waiting for other players to finish, we were able to freely explore the circuit. After a botched drift, rather of being reset by Lakitu, we were able to continue driving in a completely different direction. This freedom was immediately enticing, suggesting that Mario Kart World
is bigger, wilder, and more liberating than ever before.
