Badminton Verein Marienberg (BVM) will compete in the Saxon league next season, following a hard-fought relegation tournament.According to coach Roy Rötzer, securing their place was more challenging than anticipated.

“It was emotionally very exhausting,” says the coach of BV Marienberg, whose team competed in the Markkleeberger New Zealandhalle against the masters of the four district associations.

Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams,the most common forms of the game are “singles” (with one player per side) and “doubles” (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it in the opposing side’s half of the court.

The sport’s origins can be traced to mid-18th century British India,where it was created as a version of the earlier game battledore and shuttlecock. Simultaneously, members of the Bath Badminton Club developed the rules for the sport, standardizing it. The Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport’s global governing body, was established in 1934. Badminton became an Olympic sport at the Barcelona Games in 1992. The five events are men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

A long-term trend shows increasing global participation in badminton. According to the BWF, membership has grown by 15% over the past decade, with meaningful increases in participation in Asia and Europe.This growth reflects badminton’s increasing popularity as both a recreational and competitive sport.
