A woman who has passed through the history of cinema and television, witness to an unrepeatable era and daughter of one of the greatest icons of the twentieth century, has passed away. His existence was a mix of lights and shadows, success and confidentiality, admiration and conflict, in a delicate balance between the weight of a legendary surname and the desire for personal autonomy.

A complex relationship and an autonomous career
The bond with his mother, although profound, was marked by contrasts: «He considered me his property», Maria wrote in the book Marlene Dietrich, my mother (1992), «and I loved her and hated her at the same time». In 1947 she married the set designer William Rivawith whom he shared over fifty years of marriage and four children, including J. Michael Rivawell-known Hollywood set designer.
In the fifties, Maria Riva she became one of the first leading ladies on American television, achieving two Emmy nominations and appearing on the cover of Life Magazine next to his mother. However, he confessed with irony: «They called me the Dietrich of the poor… and maybe they were right».
Widowed since 1999, she spent her last years away from the spotlight, dedicating herself to writing and preserving her mother’s memory. She passed away with the same elegance with which she had lived: in silence, but leaving behind a century of history.
