Margaret Miles-Bramwell, Entrepreneur and Founder of Slimming World, Dies at 76

Pioneering entrepreneur Margaret Miles-Bramwell, founder of Slimming World, passed away on Sunday at her home in Mallorca, surrounded by family members. At the time of her death, she was 76. Miles-Bramwell’s legacy remains as the compassionate leader who pioneered a weight loss program rooted in support and respect for individuals.

From a Single Group to a National Network

Miles-Bramwell launched Slimming World in 1969 in Alfreton, Derbyshire, originating as a grassroots movement in a local church hall. The organization has expanded dramatically since then, employing over 400 staff at its headquarters in Somercotes and boasting a network of more than 3,500 consultants.

An OBE for Services to Public Health

In 2009, Miles-Bramwell was awarded an OBE for her significant contributions to the health of the British public. During her acceptance speech, she emphasized she wanted to address weight loss with dignity and support, contrasting the socially constructed stigma and mistreatment often associated with excess weight.

“Our job now is to continue to keep her legacy alive by doing the very same thing,” Salmon added.

Miles-Bramwell’s journey with Slimming World was deeply personal. She battled weight issues throughout her youth and aimed to create a supportive environment where individuals could feel respected and valued. Her vision was articulated in the early days of the group when she sought to foster respectful and ethical approaches to managing weight loss.

Her Lifespan of Service

Margaret Miles-Bramwell was born in April 1948 in South Normanton. After a fulfilling life, she continued her passion for empowering individuals until its end. Her commitment to Slimming World was unwavering up to her passing, solidifying her role as its chairwoman.
