From Locksmith to Labor Leader

Born in esch on April 17, 1937, Marcel Glesener began his career as a locksmith at Arbed. Though, his path soon diverged towards labor activism. In 1958,he joined the Luxembourg Christian Trade Union Confederation (LCGB),an organization that would become central to his life’s work. His dedication and leadership abilities quickly became apparent, leading to his appointment as the first Secretary-General of the LCGB in 1974. He then served as president of the LCGB from 1980 to 1996, a period marked by critically important challenges and opportunities for Luxembourgish workers.

During his time as president, Glesener championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving working conditions and protecting the rights of employees. His leadership was instrumental in shaping labor policy in Luxembourg during a period of significant economic and social change.

Political Career and European Advocacy

Glesener’s commitment to public service extended beyond the labor movement. In 1989, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Christian social People’s Party (CSV), a position he held until 2009. As a member of parliament, he was a vocal advocate for policies that promoted social justice, economic prospect, and Christian values.
