The Toronto Maple Leafs fired assistant coach Marc Savard on Monday after three straight losses heading into the National Hockey League’s mid-season.
The team announced the decision in a brief message posted on social media, less than 24 hours after a 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.
Savard, a former NHL star, was responsible for the power play, which has the worst efficiency rate in the league (13.3%). In addition, the team conceded four goals while on a power play.
There is no indication yet that the organization is considering hiring an external coach to replace him on head coach Craig Berube‘s staff.
Savard was in his second season with the Leafs, whom he joined at the same time as Berube in 2024. He had previously been an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames and the St. Louis Blues. He also coached the Windsor Spitfires, a junior team in the Ontario Hockey League.
The Maple Leafs have lost 20 of their first 35 games and are in last place in the Atlantic Division with 35 points. Only the Blue Jackets (34) have fewer points than them in the East.
The Leafs will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday for their final game before the holiday break.
