A California parole board has once again recommended parole for Patricia Krenwinkel, a follower of Charles Manson, for her role in the infamous 1969 Manson Family murders. The decision now rests with gov. Gavin Newsom.
For the second time, a California state parole board has recommended parole for Patricia Krenwinkel, a follower of cult leader Charles Manson. The decision was made Friday.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who previously denied krenwinkel’s parole recommendation, must now approve the decision. The governor’s review can take up to 150 days after a parole hearing.
The 77-year-old is currently serving a life sentence at the California Institution for Women. She was convicted for her involvement in the murders of pregnant actress sharon Tate and four others in August 1969. She also participated in the murders of grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, the following night.Prosecutors have stated that these murders were part of manson’s attempt to incite a race war.
Krenwinkel was initially recommended for parole in May 2022, but Gov. Newsom denied it five months later, according to department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records.Prior to that, she had been denied parole 14 times.
In 2016 testimony, Krenwinkel stated that she was 19 and working as a secretary when she met Manson, who was 33 at the time, at a party. She left her life behind to follow him,believing they would have a romantic relationship. She said that she was abused by Manson and tried to escape, but was repeatedly brought back and was often under the influence of drugs.
Krenwinkel admitted to stabbing Abigail folger, an heiress to a coffee fortune, multiple times on August 9, 1969. She also admitted to participating in the murders of the LaBiancas the following night. During the LaBianca murders, she wrote “Helter Skelter” and other phrases on the wall using the victims’ blood.
Krenwinkel, along with Manson and other participants, were convicted and sentenced to death. Though, in 1972, their sentences were commuted to life with the possibility of parole after the death penalty was briefly ruled unconstitutional in California.
Krenwinkel is currently the longest-serving inmate in the state. The California governor’s office and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation have not yet responded to requests for comment.
