Florin Manole, the Minister of Labor, told Digi24 that he was amazed to hear Radu Miruță’s statements about military pensions and their retirement age. Manole says that this chapter has already been regulated in 2023, and that another change “would certainly upset” the European Commission. The minister also emphasized that “at the Ministry of Labor there is no document, no proposal, no draft, no invitation to a working group” on this subject. “It is nothing, so I can only treat anything accordingly – as nothing,” he said.
Asked if the retirement age of the military will undergo changes, Minister Florin Manole said that he “heard these statements with astonishment” made by his colleague, Radu Miruță, the Minister of Defense.
“I heard these statements with astonishment, because pensions from this occupational family are already regulated from 2023. The retirement age there is increased in stages, according to the respective law, from 60 to 65 years old. It is a stage that starts from 2031”, the Minister of Labor declared to Digi24.
It is a closed milestone with military pensions. The reversibility of the reform would certainly upset the European Commission, and the necessity is not clear to me. So, we are talking about a law in force from 2023, made in the context of the PNRR, accepted by the European Commission, which already increases the retirement age.
“The military retirement age is not 48-50, as they say. No! The age in 2015 is 60 years, and according to the 2023 law, it increases from 60 to 65. Of course, there can be early retirements. But that exists for any kind of retiree category, and that requires some corrections in the amount of pension you receive.
“The mass of military retirees should not be treated as profiteers of the system, because they are not”
“I don’t think military pensions should be seen as excessive pensions at all, because there are a lot of soldiers, ex-soldiers or non-commissioned officers who earn an average of 3,700-3,800 lei per month. That is, not exorbitant pensions. Yes, generals can earn over 14,000 lei. Of course, this is not a small amount at all, but once again, the great mass of military pensioners should not be treated as profiteers of the system, because they are not profiteers of the system.
The amounts there are small, some have not increased for a long time and that is a problem, and the retirement age, because this has been talked about for a long time, the retirement age is already increased, I don’t see where and how it could be increased,” Florin Manole pointed out.
“And let me tell you one more thing, speaking of collegiality. I found out about this issue on TV. Today, at this time, in the Ministry of Labor there is no document, no proposal, no draft, no invitation to a working group. There is nothing, so I can only treat anything accordingly – as nothing,” added the Minister of Labor.
