Controversy Over Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Funeral and Memorial: A Closer Look

The late Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former prime minister, was laid to rest on December 28, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi with full state honors. However, the location of his funeral has sparked a significant political row, with the opposition alleging a lack of respect and dignity. Meanwhile, the government maintains that plans for a memorial are already underway.

Rahul Gandhi’s Criticism

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, criticized the government, stating that by performing Dr. Singh’s last rites at Nigambodh Ghat, the current administration “insulted a great son of Mother India.” Gandhi argued that Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister for 10 years, transformed the country into an economic superpower during his tenure.

“Till date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorized burial sites so that every person could have a last darshan and pay homage without any inconvenience,” Gandhi added on X. “Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves our highest respect and a memorial. The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community.”

Congress’s Stand

Earlier, on December 27, 2024, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to identify a designated place for the funeral of Dr. Singh and a memorial thereafter. However, the government’s response was met with further criticism from various Congress leaders.

Lok Sabha member Manickam Tagore expressed his disappointment over the disparity in honors. “Atalji [former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee] was honored with a separate memorial for his funeral, yet Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji is to be laid to rest in Nigambodh Ghat? Why this disparity? Such selective treatment is deeply disheartening,” Tagore tweeted.

Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also voiced her concerns on X, arguing that the Centre had not done justice to the dignity of Dr. Singh’s post, his legacy, and the Sikh community.

Allegations of Mismanagement

In a detailed statement on X, chairman of the party’s media and publicity department, Pawan Khera, alleged mismanagement during Dr. Singh’s state funeral. He highlighted several issues, including inadequate seating arrangements for the family, breaches in protocol during the flag-handing ceremony and gun salute, and disruptions caused by security measures.

“The state funeral of Dr. Manmohan Singh was a shocking display of disrespect and mismanagement,” Khera said. “Only three chairs were kept in the front row for Dr. Singh’s family. Congress leaders had to insist on seats for his daughters and other family members. PM & Ministers did not stand up when the National Flag was handed to the widow of the late Prime Minister, or during the gun salute. The family was given inadequate space around the pyre due to soldiers occupying one side… Shah’s motorcade disrupted the funeral procession, leaving family cars outside. The gate was closed, and family members had to be located and brought back in.”

Government’s Response

Despite the criticism, the government stated that decision-making regarding the memorial is underway. Prime Minister Modi’s office confirmed that a trust has been formed to identify the location for the memorial. The statement read, “The government recognizes the importance of honoring Dr. Manmohan Singh and his contributions to India. A trust has been set up, and consultations are ongoing with various stakeholders to identify the ideal location for a fitting memorial.”
