EAST HARLEM, Manhattan — A recent incident at a CityMD urgent care center in Manhattan triggered a health scare over the weekend, prompting concern among both staff and patients.
Health Scare at CityMD Urgent Care Center
The concern emerged on Sunday morning around 11:15 a.m. at a CityMD located on East 125th Street between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue. Initial reports suggested that a patient may have been exposed to an infectious disease, leading to a precautionary response.
First responders, following standard protocols, donned personal protective equipment (PPE) and transported two individuals to the hospital for further evaluation. The swift action was taken to ensure the safety of both the individuals involved and the wider community.
NYC Health Department Investigates
Upon consulting with the New York City Department of Health, officials clarified that neither of the patients had been exposed to the Ebola virus or any other infectious disease. The false alarm was a relief for health authorities and the patients involved.
An official statement from the NYC Health Department Acting Commissioner, Dr. Michelle Morse, provided reassurance: “The two patients that sought services at CityMD on February 16 at 153 East 125th Street do not have Ebola. Neither patient had exposure to Ebola or other factors that would indicate risk. One patient is being taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for routine testing and treatment. The NYC Health Department is in close communication with FDNY, CityMD, and NYC Health + Hospitals.”
CityMD’s Response
CityMD, the urgent care provider, also released a statement emphasizing patient privacy while confirming the situation: “For the protection of patient privacy, we do not have any comment. There is no report of any Ebola virus or exposure, consistent with what the DOH confirmed as well.”
Lessons Learned from the Incident
This incident highlights the importance of quick action in emergency situations and the role of health departments in verifying information to prevent unnecessary panic. It also underscores the rigorous protocols in place to manage potential infectious disease exposures.
Staying Informed
In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, it is crucial to turn to official sources for updates and guidance. The NYC Health Department and CityMD’s transparent communication played a pivotal role in managing this situation effectively.
