A Stranger’s Account
Kobayashi was last seen on November 12th, walking into Tijuana via a pedestrian crossing after taking a bus from LA to the border. Surveillance footage captured her meeting an unidentified man near the LAX train stop, and they spent several hours together before parting ways.
The man told police that Kobayashi, who he characterized as a "free spirit," seemed calm and coherent throughout their encounter. She expressed a desire to see the redwoods and mentioned her upcoming trip to New York.
Police Investigation
LAPD Detective Omar Franco told People magazine that the man simply listened to Kobayashi and offered no indication of wrongdoing. Moreover, video footage shows Kobayashi smiling and seemingly at ease with the stranger, even passing a pair of police officers without raising alarm.
The lack of any signs of distress, coupled with video evidence of Kobayashi’s seemingly voluntary departure, has led investigators to believe she may have disappeared voluntarily.
Searching for Answers
Although the man seen with Kobayashi has been cleared, authorities still have many unanswered questions. Why did Kobayashi leave her phone at LAX? Why did she choose to travel to Tijuana? What was her ultimate goal?
