A tragic event unfolded at the Lynbrook Village shopping centre in Melbourne, where a 36-year-old man died while fleeing from police over alleged family violence matters.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas revealed that officers were sent to a home near the Lynbrook Village shopping centre around 1:10 PM to arrest the man. Upon their arrival, the suspect noticed the police and jumped from a balcony into the shopping centre grounds, sprinting inside.

Following him into the shopping centre, officers lost sight of the man. A search inside a public toilet block revealed men’s footwear inside a female cubicle, prompting them to break in.

Inspector Thomas stated that the man had apparently injured himself with an edged weapon and was threatening officers. As a result, a taser was deployed, and he was taken into custody.

Emergency services were summoned to provide first aid, and the man was taken to the back of the shopping centre, awaiting a helicopter for transport. Unfortunately, the man was later declared dead.

A critical incident has been declared, and homicide detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The investigation will receive oversight from the Professional Standards Command.

The coroner has been notified about the death, and a thorough examination will be conducted.
