On New Year’s Eve, the small community of Cluain Fada, New Ross, was rocked by the tragic death of John ‘King’ O’Connor. Found unresponsive at his home, the incident immediately turned into a murder investigation, sparking a communitywide search for answers and justice.

Murder Investigation Launched

The Cluain Fada tragedy unfolded when emergency services responded to O’Connor’s home around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, they found him unresponsive, leading to the immediate launch of a comprehensive murder investigation by the Garda Síochána (Irish Police).

Arrests and Court Appearances

A man in his 30s, arrested as part of the investigation, is set to appear before Wexford District Court on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 10:30 p.m. He will be charged in connection with O’Connor’s death. Strikingly, a second man arrested in the case has since been released without charge.

Post-Mortem and Preliminary Results

The state pathologist conducted a post-mortem examination on Wednesday, with preliminary results provided to the investigating team. However, for the sake of operational security, these results have not been disclosed to the public.

Funeral Arrangements

There will be a reposing service at Cooney’s Funeral Home in New Ross on Saturday, January 4, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The burial will take place on Sunday, January 5, starting with the removal from the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. to St. Stephen’s Cemetery, New Ross, followed by a 12 p.m. burial ceremony.

John O’Connor was predeceased by his mother, Nancy, and leaves behind a loving family, including his children Chloe, Aaron, and Kaylee, his father Ned, siblings Eddie, Triona, Deirdre, and Paula, and several grandchildren. He is remembered by a wide circle of family and friends for his good heart and dedication.

Investigation Continues with Public Appeal

The senior investigating officer from New Ross Garda Station is leading the ongoing investigation. A family liaison officer also continues to provide support to O’Connor’s family during this difficult time.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses who can provide information about the night of the incident. They are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those in the vicinity of Cluain Fada on the evening of December 31, 2023.
