PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) – Jury selection was held Monday in the trial of a Maine man accused of killing his cellmate back in 2022.

Carl Williams is charged with one count of intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder in the death of Renaldo Jones.

According to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, Williams and Jones were involved in an altercation with one another in mid-January 2022, while both were incarcerated at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.

Prosecutors said that during the altercation, Williams assaulted Jones and caused a traumatic brain injury. Jones was later transported to Maine Medical Center and died in May 2022 after months of being unresponsive.

Jones was serving a 30-month sentence for a theft conviction and had one year left when he died.

Williams was in jail for a number of convictions, including striking a vehicle with a pickup truck and assaulting a Penobscot County corrections officer.

The jury trial begins Tuesday.
